Outstanding KU theatre and film students honored at ceremony

LAWRENCE -- Outstanding theatre and film students at the University of Kansas were honored May 10 at the annual Stage and Screen Supper, held by the Department of Theatre and Film and the University Theatre on the Crafton-Preyer Theatre Stage.

More than 250 students, faculty, staff and alumni attended the awards banquet.

Thomas J. Picasso, a graduating senior from Overland Park, received the University Theatre's highest honor, the Kilty Kane, presented each year to the person leaving the program who has contributed the most to KU theatre.

The department's Award of Merit was presented to Andrew T. Tsubaki, professor emeritus of theatre and film, and his wife, Lilly, for their outstanding contributions to the program. Tsubaki, who retired at the end of the 2000-01 academic year, and his wife recently established the Andrew and Lilly Tsubaki Award for students participating in KU Study Abroad.

Laura Kirk, a 1989 KU theatre graduate, received the Alumni Honor Citation in recognition of her career as an actress, scriptwriter and filmmaker. Kirk, a Lecompton native who now lives in Cornwall, Conn., wrote and starred in "Lisa Picard Is Famous," which made its Midwest premiere in Lawrence in October 2001.
