LAWRENCE -- A remembrance and celebration service for University of Kansas graduate Shannon Lucile Martin, who was murdered on May 13, 2001, during a trip to Golfito, Costa Rica, to conduct research, will be at noon Thursday, May 9, at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries building, 1204 Oread Ave.
Martin was 23 when she was killed on Mother's Day, just days before she was to participate in graduation ceremonies at KU. Jeanette Stauffer of Topeka, Martin's mother, is expected to attend the ceremony.
The service will be at the site of a tree and plaque that were dedicated to Martin on Nov. 1, 2001. Sunrise Garden Center of Lawrence donated the tree -- an Indian magic crab apple -- for the memorial. Martin was employed by the garden center.
Martin was very involved with ECM and helped found the center's Veggie Lunch. The lunch takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays and serves only meatless meals, which volunteer chefs prepare.
An honors student, Martin was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. KU's BioHawk publication featured her as a "next generation" standout biologist. Fluent in Spanish, she studied in Golfito for a semester in 2000 and served as a volunteer English teacher for high school students in Golfito.
For more information about the ceremony, contact Thad Holcombe, ECM campus pastor, at (785) 843-4933.
