KU Slavic languages and literatures students receive awards of excellence

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures recently honored students for outstanding scholarship at a reception.

Students received certificates and book awards for excellence in various levels of Croatian, Serbian, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.

Three students received additional awards. Patrick Carrier, a doctoral student in theatre and film from Bemidji, Minn., received the Kuhlke Russian Theatre Award for $2,000. Lyle McMillan, sophomore in political science and Slavic languages and literatures from Jamestown, will study for one year in Russia through the National Security Education Program Award, and John Bidwell, senior in Slavic languages and literatures from Lawrence, received a grant from the American Council of Teachers of Russian to study at the KU summer program in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

KU's Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures is the central component of KU's Center for Russian and East European Studies, one of nine federally funded national resource centers in the United States.

Kansas home counties are: Butler, Cloud, Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, McPherson, Ness, Sedgwick and Shawnee.
