Pharmacy school in top 5 for NIH funding in 2001

LAWRENCE -- To get a sense of how Lawrence is attracting funding for innovative research that benefits both the economy and the quality of life, one need look no farther than the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.

KU's pharmacy school recently ranked ahead of several schools in much larger cities across the nation, ranking fourth among all pharmacy schools for attracting funding from the National Institutes of Health last year.

In 2001, KU's pharmacy school received 33 awards from the NIH, totaling about $8.44 million. The three schools listed above KU were the University of California, San Francisco (47 awards/$18.5 million); the University of Utah (35 awards/$12.3 million); and the University of Arizona (18 awards/$9.1 million.)

Jack Fincham, dean of the KU pharmacy school, said the relation between university research and economic development was indisputable.

"KU supports jobs currently in place, allows for the creation of additional jobs and puts the city of Lawrence on the map," he said.

Fincham said the success of his school -- and the university as a whole -- was the result of the top-notch faculty and researchers that KU attracts.

"Our faculty rank among the very best in the country, and departments here at KU are world renowned and respected as being at the very top in their disciplines," he said.
