LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas School of Journalism has placed third in the nation in the writing competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards, often called the "Pulitzers of college journalism."
Journalism schools accumulating the most points earned by their students in the writing category during the year were designated as winners. Only Northwestern University and Pennsylvania State University finished with more points than students at KU's William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communications. It is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Currently, 105 accredited undergraduate schools of journalism participate in the program, which awards more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants each year.
"For years the School of Journalism has been among the leaders in producing Hearst winners," said James K. Gentry, dean of the journalism school. "This is just further evidence of the quality of both our students and the instruction they receive."
