'Night of a Thousand Dinners' fact sheet

Source for the following points: Night of a Thousand Dinners, a joint initiative of the Canadian Landmine Foundation and the United Nations Association of the USA.

 • Each year, approximately 18,000 people are killed or maimed by land mines. According to UNICEF, 30 percent to 40 percent of all mine victims are children.

 • There are 70 million active land mines buried in the ground in more than 80 countries.

 • It costs as little as $3 to manufacture an antipersonnel land mine but up to $1,000 to remove it from the ground.

 • Even the suspicion that land could be mined can take an area out of desperately needed agricultural production or transportation pathways.

 • Last year's Night of a Thousand Dinners engaged tens of thousands of individuals in more than 35 countries and raised $1.4 million.

 • The concept of Night of a Thousand Dinners is simple: individuals host dinners in their homes for their friends and family and collect contributions from their guests. Hosts then forward the collected funds to an organization chosen from a list of 10 coalition partners. The contribution size is determined by the host or donor and can range from $10 per guest to $1,000 or more.

 • Funds raised this year will go to assist de-mining and survivor assistance projects in some of the most heavily mined countries in the world (Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Croatia, Mozambique and Vietnam).
