KU Open House to feature new events and activities

WITH NEW EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, ORGANIZERS OF THIS YEAR'S OPEN HOUSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SAY THE EVENT PROMISES EVEN MORE FUN THAN LAST YEAR'S FESTIVITIES.

THE SECOND ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS OPEN HOUSE TAKES PLACE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH FROM 10 A-M TO 3 P-M ON THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS CAMPUS IN LAWRENCE.

MARGEY (pronounced with hard "g") FREDERICK, K-U VISITOR CENTER DIRECTOR, IS COORDINATING THIS YEAR'S OPEN HOUSE. SHE SAYS THE FESTIVITIES INCLUDE MORE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS ALONG JAYHAWK BOULEVARD.
FREDERICK: "This year we're actually expanding our fun zones and trying to make more hands-on things. We're trying to concentrate more on the Boulevard instead of having people spread out all over campus." (13 sec.)

NEW THIS YEAR IS A MAIN STAGE IN FRONT OF WESCOE HALL FEATURING MUSIC, DANCE AND DRILL TEAM PERFORMANCES BY K-U STUDENTS.

THE OPEN HOUSE CONCLUDES WITH A PARADE CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FEATURING FLAGS FROM A HUNDRED DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. THAT'S FOLLOWED BY A BLOCK PARTY WITH MUSIC AND FOOD FROM SEVERAL LAWRENCE MERCHANTS, SAYS FREDERICK.
FREDERICK: "The parade is around 2 o'clock and at about 2:30, the parade will end up at the Alumni Center, and in that parking lot we will have a band going and free food for about an hour." (11 sec.)

OPEN HOUSE ACTIVITIES ARE DESIGNED TO APPEAL TO ALL AGES. FREDERICK SAYS KIDS WILL LOVE INTERACTING WITH THE COMPUTER-ANIMATED JAYHAWK. ADULTS WILL ENJOY TOURS OF THE SPENCER ART MUSEUM AND NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM.
FREDERICK: "Elementary students come and particularly a lot of grandparents bring their grandchildren. It's a good activity. It's a very family-oriented kind of a day -- no sales pitch about KU and nothing for sale. Come to the campus, feel comfortable." (15 sec.)

FREDERICK SAYS TRAFFIC SHOULDN'T BE A CONCERN DURING THE EVENT. THERE'S NO HOME FOOTBALL GAME, AND FREE PARKING AND A SHUTTLE SERVICE ARE AVAILABLE.
FREDERICK: "Parking is free and we're running several shuttle buses. They'll run the same route by about 10-minute intervals. We're encouraging people to park in the parking garage over by the Union and the Alumni Center or park in the parking garage by Allen Fieldhouse or the Lied Center." (15 sec.)

THE K-U OPEN HOUSE RUNS FROM 10 A-M TO 3 P-M ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH, RAIN OR SHINE. FOR A COMPLETE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS, LOG ONTO OPENHOUSE DOT K-U DOT E-D-U.
