KU to welcome Hispanic engineering students at conference Oct. 18 to 20

LAWRENCE -- More than 80 student members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers from the Midwest and Rocky Mountain regions will descend on the University of Kansas campus as part of the 2002 SHPE Region III Student Leadership Conference, Oct. 18 to 20.

SHPE chapters at KU and Kansas State University will host the conference jointly.

"This is the first time KU and K-State have worked together on this conference," said Andres Vicuna, a senior in civil engineering at KU and the KU SHPE chapter president.

A variety of presentations and activities related to professional development are planned for the students, said Vicuna, who is from Lima, Peru.

The program features presentations from a variety of corporations and organizations, including Sprint, Hallmark, Black & Veatch, Procter & Gamble and HP-Compaq.

"We're trying to gain tools and resources for the future," Vicuna said. "We're grateful about the corporate support. Without the companies this plan would have remained just that -- a plan."

The session will begin at 8 a.m. Friday at KU. On Saturday morning the contingent will travel to Manhattan for a full slate of activities at Kansas State University. The conference participants will return to Lawrence that evening, and conference activities will conclude Sunday morning in Lawrence.

The SHPE Region III includes chapters in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.
