LAWRENCE -- Ninety area high school seniors and their parents joined the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association in honoring James and Joyce McKoon Trower, Salina, for their longtime volunteer efforts on behalf of KU during a Kansas Honors Program in Salina on Oct. 16 at the Salina Country Club.
Kansas Alumni Association President Fred Williams presented the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award to the Trowers, recognizing more than 18 years of service with the Kansas Honors Program as well as their assistance in planning and hosting numerous KU student recruitment events in their community through the years. The Trowers, both KU graduates, also help coordinate the annual KU picnic in Salina.
Jim Trower earned a bachelorØs degree in business administration and accounting in 1977. He is president and CEO of the Woods & Durham Chartered accounting firm. Joyce Trower graduated in 1976 with a degree in allied health. She works as a physical therapist, specializing in pediatrics.
The Trowers are members of the Saline County Jayhawk Club, the Kansas Alumni Association and the Williams Educational Fund, which supports KU Athletics.
The Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award, created in 1986 by the Alumni Association, honors volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their home communities. The award is named for Clodfelter, who received a bachelorØs degree in 1941 from KU and worked for KU for 47 years, 42 of them at the Alumni Association. Clodfelter, known to countless Jayhawks nationwide, retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.
Since 1971, the KU Alumni and KU Endowment associations, with the help of more than 160 alumni volunteers statewide, have sponsored local events to honor the top 10 percent of Kansas high school seniors. Seniors and their parents from high schools in Ellsworth, Lincoln, Ottawa and Saline counties were honored Oct. 16.
