LAWRENCE -- Approximately 600 to 700 participating chemists and students of chemistry are expected to attend the 37th Midwest regional meeting of the American Chemical Society on Wednesday, Oct. 23 through, Friday, Oct. 25, at the Kansas Union on the University of Kansas campus.
Scientists and students from universities in the seven-state region that includes Arkansas, Iowa, parts of southern Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota will make more than 330 scientific presentations. In addition, chemists from Oklahoma and Colorado and a few from abroad plan to attend, according to Robert Carlson, general chair for the three-day event.
Special events will include an opening reception, more than 60 poster presentations by undergraduates, an awards banquet, an employment clearinghouse, a graduate fair and an exhibition of scientific equipment, services, and book publishers.
Ten symposia are planned for the following topics:
Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to Problems in Material Science
Applications of NMR to Problems in Pharmaceutical Chemistry
New Developments in Combinatorial Chemistry
Meeting the Analytical Challenges of Proteomics
Probing Biological Surfaces and Anion Receptors
Green Catalysis (uses of chemistry that are beneficial to the environment)
Theory and Simulation of Condensed Phase Materials
Research in Problem-Solving by Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Undergraduate Research
Catalysis
Three general sessions will cover analytical and organic chemistry, chemical education, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

The undergraduate poster session begins at 7 p.m., Thursday Oct. 24 in the Lobby of the Union and continues on Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. There will also be oral presentations from 8 a.m. until 12 noon. Friday in the Kansas Room.
The Midwest ACS regional meeting rotates among universities in the seven states. KU was host for the 1992 meeting. KU Continuing Education is assisting in marketing and coordinating the meeting events.
