KU students to be honored for summer service in Kansas communities Oct. 8

LAWRENCE -- Six University of Kansas students will be honored Oct. 8 for their summer health promotion work in various Kansas communities.

The Kansas Community Leadership Corps will recognize the students at a 7 p.m. dinner reception at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Massachusetts in Lawrence. Parents and corps staff are invited to attend.

In the Kansas Community Leadership Corps two-month summer internships, the students supported the planning and implementation of communities' health promotion programs. This is the fifth year that KU students have participated.

Leadership Corps students received a $2,000 stipend for their living expenses from June 1 to July 30. In addition, the students took $500 grants to their community sites to help with local project expenses. The Kansas Office of Prevention, Topeka, funded the stipends with a grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Programs, a federal agency that supports drug abuse prevention projects.

Corps participation requires academic merit and training from KU staff. Some corps members enrolled in one of two KU courses -- Community Leadership or Community Health and Development. The students worked on programs administered by the health centers, churches and other local organizations.

Along with other health promotion and community project work groups at KU, the Kansas Community Leadership Corps provides research, training and health promotion service for Kansas communities.

The application deadline for the 2003 Leadership Corps is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. Applications are available online at the corps Web site, ctb.ku.edu/services/kclc. Graduating high school seniors who plan to attend KU are eligible to apply.
