Homecoming parade moves to Saturday; local charities to benefit from new events

LAWRENCE -- This year, the annual University of Kansas Homecoming parade is moving from Friday to Saturday, before the football game against Colorado. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, on Jayhawk Boulevard.

And in the days leading up to the parade, three events will make their debut during KU's 2002 Homecoming Week, Oct. 6 through 12. A run for charity, a pep rally and a canned food drive all have been added to the celebration.

The "Jog for Jubilee" 5K walk/run starts at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in the Burge Union parking lot. It will benefit the Jubilee Café, which provides assistance to homeless people in Lawrence. The cost is $10 for KU students and $15 for non-students. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. All participants will receive a T-shirt, and the winner will receive a restaurant gift certificate.

A pep rally will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the south end of the Memorial Stadium parking lot. The rally will include an appearance by Coach Mark Mangino and members of the KU football team, as well as the spirit squad and the Crimson Girls.

A canned-food drive benefiting the Pélathé Native American Resource Center will be from Sunday, Oct. 6, through Wednesday, Oct. 9. Drop boxes will be located at KU scholarship halls, fraternities and sororities.
