LAWRENCE -- The Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas has formed a collaboration with the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.
The first fruit of the collaboration was a one-day conference on "Rome-England-America: Crisis and Leadership in the West" on Sept. 21 at the Dallas Institute. The KU speakers were Stanley Lombardo, professor of classics, who presented "Aeneas in Crisis" and read from his own translation of Virgil's Aeneid, and Victor Bailey, Hall Center director, who presented "Winston Churchill: What Made Him the Unquestioned Tribal Leader in Britain's Moment of Crisis?" From the Dallas Institute, Virginia Arbery, professor of political philosophy, presented "The Mask of George Washington."
A large audience attended the conference, which included a panel discussion on "Leadership and Crisis in the 21st Century," to which Timothy O'Leary, editorial writer on world affairs for the Dallas Morning News, contributed.
The affiliation between the Center and the Institute first was recommended by KU alumnus Randy Gordon, a Dallas lawyer, president of the Dallas Institute board of directors, and member of the Hall Center's advisory board. Directors Victor Bailey and Larry Allums met in April to explore collaboration.
