Magazine names KU's Janet Murguia to '100 Most Influential Hispanics' list

LAWRENCE -- Hispanic Business magazine has named Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Kansas, to its 2002 list of the nation's 100 "Most Influential Hispanics."

The list includes such notables as Kansas City Royals manager Tony Peña; four-term U.S. Rep. Bob Menendez of New Jersey; Fox Sports News anchor Lisa Guerrero; Vanity Fair fashion editor Patricia Herrera; Olympic speed skater Derek Parra, the first Mexican-American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics; Maj. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, commanding officer of the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division; and Orlando Figueroa, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program.

Hispanic Business compiled the list through nominations from readers, Web site visitors, contributing editors and writers, and magazine staff. The list appears in the magazine's October issue and online at http://www.HispanicBusiness.com/news/newsbyid.asp?id=7443. The 21-year-old magazine has about 200,000 readers.

This spring Murguia also was named in the magazine's list of 80 elite Hispanic businesswomen in the United States.

In May, Murguia was elected to the board of directors for La Raza, the nation's leading Hispanic advocacy organization. La Raza's board is composed of 32 representatives from community-based organizations, the corporate sector and academia.

Murguia oversees the university's internal and external relations with the public, including governmental and public affairs. She is responsible for KU's public relations offices on its various campuses, the public radio station, visitor services and special events, and trademark licensing office. She also coordinates the university's strategic planning and marketing efforts with those of the KU Alumni Association and the KU Athletics Corporation and works closely with the KU Endowment Association.

A Kansas City, Kan., native, Murguia earned three degrees from KU: a juris doctorate from the law school in 1985, a bachelor of science in journalism from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications in 1982, and a bachelor of arts in Spanish from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1982.

Before coming to KU in 2001, Murguia served as deputy campaign manager and director of constituency outreach for the Gore/Lieberman presidential campaign. Before the campaign, she worked at the White House in various capacities beginning in 1994. She was deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of legislative affairs, serving as the senior White House liaison to Congress.
