KU ensemble to participate in unique live online Sept. 11 memorial concert

LAWRENCE -- A University of Kansas group will be one of a handful of university ensembles across the nation to participate in a unique live online concert to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.

The Electro-Acoustic Music Ensemble, led by Kip Haaheim, professor of music at KU, will take part in "Memoria/Memoire." The live memorial event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, and will be streamed from the Herberger College's Institute for Studies in the Arts at Arizona State University, in conjunction with the KU Department of Music and Dance and other universities across the country. The concert includes live performances streamed from several universities across the country.

The KU ensemble will perform from 2:30 to 3 p.m. in KU's Computer Services Building auditorium. The performance will be streamed live on the Web at isa.hc.asu.edu/memoria/webcast.html. Viewers also will be able to participate in a live video chat following the performances. Before the Electro-Acoustic Music Ensemble plays, the other performances will be projected live onto the large screen in the Computer Services Building auditorium.

The live performance at KU is free and open to the public.

"Memoria/Memoire" is a collaborative project by Haaheim; Carol Flax, media artist and professor of art at the University of Arizona; Patricia Clark, media artist and manager of the Digital Imaging Lab at the Institute for Studies in the Arts; and Jerzy Rozenblit, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Arizona.

The live event also includes opportunities for Web users to chat or to submit their own recollections, experiences or feelings by uploading video and audio files, or by submitting text documents.

The site will remain up after the concert.

Haaheim and Flax have collaborated in a variety of multimedia projects. However, this is the first time the project has been live and interactive. Haaheim also has collaborated with Clark in the past.

Information about the live event is available online. For more information on "Memoria/Memoire," call the Institute for Studies in the Arts at (480) 965-9438.
