LAWRENCE -- The "Surprise Patrol" today handed out the 20th and final $5,000 Kemper Award for excellence in teaching and advising for 2002 to a University of Kansas faculty member at the School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kan.
In all, 20 professors were honored and $100,000 distributed with Kemper Awards this year.
The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined by a seven-member selection committee. The committee's members include students, faculty and KU alumni. This is the seventh year in the 10-year award program. The William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, established a $500,000 fund for the program. The KU Endowment Association has provided $500,000 in matching funds.
All 2002 winners will be honored at a ceremony at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union.
Today's winner is: Tomas L. Griebling, assistant professor of urology at KU Medical Center
Griebling prides himself on teaching by example and says he hopes that he can pass on the traits of empathy, compassion and professionalism in his daily work. His co-workers praise his ability to convey a deeper understanding of medicine to his students and residents, as well as to his patients. Students laud Griebling's mixture of an approachable personality, exacting academic standards and a practical emphasis on culling out the useful lessons from his field to apply to their own.
