LAWRENCE --Show officials at the 14th Annual Lawrence Indian Arts Show competition have announced this year's award winners and participants.
Opening Sept. 14, the juried exhibit will present 112 works by 55 artists representing 37 tribes and 14 states. Prize money totaling $7,475, awarded in two- and three-dimensional categories, include best-of-show awards of $1,500 each, 14 merit awards of $300 each and $275 in youth competition awards. This year's judges were Benjamin Harjo Jr. and Nelda Schrupp.
Award recipients include best-of-show winners Amada Pena, two-dimensional art, and Jane Osti, three-dimensional art. Merit awards for two-dimensional works winners are: Richard Dawavendewa, Lisa Fifield, Charlotte Herr, Linda Lomahaftewa, Allen Mose, Chessney Sevier and Jackie Sevier. For three-dimensional works, merit award winners are: Barry Coffin, Bill Glass, Levi Jiron, Clarence Lee, Carol Pecos, Sandra Walker and Connie Hart Yellowman. Honorable mention for two-dimensional works goes to: Dolores Corcoran, Gwen Coleman Lester, Allen Mose, Sandra Okuma, Leonard Peltier and Chessney Sevier. Honorable mention for three-dimensional works goes to: Craig Goseyun, Nathan Hart, Debra Laws, Pahponee, Joseph Skywolf and Robert Dale Tsosie.
This year's youth competition winners are: Faith Coyote, Isaac Coyote, David Nieto and Shandiin Woodward.
The Lawrence Indian Arts Show begins at the KU Museum of Anthropology with a $35 per person benefit opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. First-nighters will be able to see and purchase artwork before the juried show opens to the public Sept. 14. The show and sale will remain until Oct. 20. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be an admission charge to the museum during the time of the exhibit ($3 for adults, $1 for all students, free for children under 5). All proceeds will go to support future Lawrence Indian Arts Shows.
In addition, the 14th Annual Haskell Indian Art Market runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence. The outdoor market brings more than 165 American Indian artists from across the United Sates. The event will give visitors the opportunity to see and purchase original artwork. Entertainment will be scheduled throughout the day. Food services are available, and admission and parking are free.
The Lawrence Indian Arts Show creates an opportunity for the public to view and gain an appreciation for works by American Indian artists. In both the juried competition and the market, the public will have the opportunity to view the talents and skills of these artists in baskets, beadwork, jewelry, wood carvings, pottery, sculpture, textiles, paintings, graphics and drawings. Many new artists are involved in this year's competition and market.
Other events scheduled Sept. 14 through Oct. 20 are a photographic exhibit of works by four American Indian photographers at the KU Spencer Museum of Art and an exhibit of baby quilts by American Indian mothers at the Lawrence Public Library.
