College Board names KU provost to national commission on writing education

LAWRENCE -- The College Board has named University of Kansas Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost David E. Shulenburger to a new national advisory panel on teaching and learning writing.

Shulenburger joins 15 leaders, including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch, Vanderbilt University President E. Gordon Gee and incoming Ohio State University President Karen Holbrook, on the Commission on Writing in America's Schools and Colleges. Former KU Chancellor Gene Budig also was named to the commission as one of two ex-officio members. The other is College Board President Gaston Caperton.

The commission is charged with defining and reaffirming the essential role of writing in education and making recommendations on how students, their families, schools, colleges and universities can improve the quality of writing in the United States. Commission members include leading college and university presidents, chancellors and provosts and school superintendents from across the nation. An advisory committee of writing experts will support their work.

The commission will meet for the first time Sept. 30 in Chicago. A final report may be finished by April.

"A key component of success in virtually any career today is the ability to write clearly and effectively," said Shulenburger. "It is vital that schools at all levels require students to express themselves in an articulate manner."

Shulenburger, who has been provost at KU since 1996 and chief academic officer since 1993, holds a bachelor's degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined KU in 1974 as an assistant professor of business.

Shulenburger serves on the board of the Center for Research Libraries, the Duke University Talent Identification Program National Board of Advisors and the board of BioOne. He also recently completed a term as chair of the Council on Academic Affairs of National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.

The College Board is a national nonprofit membership association whose mission is to "prepare, inspire and connect students to college and opportunity." The association was founded in 1900 and comprises more than 4,200 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations.

The Writing Commission's work will be completed in approximately seven months, culminating in a report to the nation, tentatively in April 2003. The first meeting is scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at O'Hare Airport, and three additional meetings are to be scheduled.
