LAWRENCE -- Preparations are under way for the third annual Collage Concert, sponsored by the University of Kansas School of Fine Arts. This year's event, which launches the school's performance and exhibition season, is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the Lied Center of Kansas.
The Collage Concert showcases works by KU visual- and performing-arts students and faculty in a fast-paced, nonstop, 90-minute format. The concert brings together the four units of the school -- the departments of art, design, music and dance -- and the Lied Center of Kansas. Proceeds benefit the school.
This year's event marks the debut of three new directors: John P. Lynch, director of bands; John Paul Johnson, director of choral activities; and Timothy J. Hankewich, director of orchestras.
Among those slated to perform are the Kansas Brass Quintet, a woodwind duo, Instrumental Collegium Musicum, combined choirs, Saxophone Quartet I, Percussion Ensemble I, the Men's Glee Club, and faculty and members of the University Dance Company.
Representing the visual arts, four videos exploring "Expanded Disciplines in Art and Design" will play at intervals during the concert. A collaborative video, composed by art, music and dance faculty, also will be shown.
The Marching Jayhawks will sound the concert's conclusion.
Tickets cost $7 general and $5 for students and seniors and are available at all KU ticket offices: the Lied Center, (785) 864-2787; Murphy Hall, (785) 864-3982; and SUA in the Kansas Union, (785)864-SHOW.
