LAWRENCE -- For the second consecutive year, 25 University of Kansas students attending a KU football game were surprised with scholarships worth $1,000 each.
Officials with the Kansas University Endowment Association selected the students Saturday, Sept. 14, from among those present at the match-up between KU and Southwest Missouri State University. Students were selected from prechosen seats at Memorial Stadium and numerically from among those entering the gates.
To qualify for the giveaway, students at the game had to be enrolled at KU and wear one of the 19,000 blue 2002 edition KU First T-shirts, which were given away on KU's four campuses. Students did not have to purchase anything to win. KU First: Invest in Excellence is the third and largest fund-raising campaign for the university.
The KU First T-shirts, which were funded in part by Intrust Bank, allowed students to attend the game for free.
The scholarships were made possible by a $25,000 gift to KU Endowment from longtime KU supporters Dick and Jeanne Tinberg. The Leawood couple also provided the funding for the scholarships awarded during a fall 2001 football game between KU and UCLA. The scholarships will be applied to the students' spring tuition.
