LAWRENCE -- Every weekday and on Saturdays through Dec. 12, the University of Kansas Office of Admissions and Scholarships is open to schedule campus visits for prospective students, their parents and sometimes a few grandparents or other guests. In addition, KU admissions offers several special visit event days for high school and other students considering KU.
"There are many reasons to consider KU, and the best way to learn about them is to visit campus," said Lisa Pinamonti, interim admissions director at KU.
"Our office is open six days a week to help students and parents get a firsthand look at the campus and meet some faculty and staff as well as students," Pinamonti said.
All scheduled weekday visits include an overall presentation in the Visitor Center auditorium and a campus tour, Pinamonti added. "If prospective students request appointments with faculty in their field of interest, our staff will arrange appointments too," she said. She advises visitors to allow three to four hours for the visits.
On Saturdays, prospective students may attend a 9:30 a.m. presentation and a 10:30 a.m. campus tour. They also may tour housing and ask questions of a panel of KU students. Faculty appointments are not scheduled on Saturdays.
"Because many parents find it convenient to schedule a visit around a weekend, our staff schedules two staff presentations and campus tours on Monday and Friday," Pinamonti said. Staff members are available to answer questions about academic majors, student housing, admissions, scholarships, financial aid, KU traditions, famous alumni and student activities.
Presentations begin at 9:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, with campus tours at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, presentations are offered at 9:30 a.m. followed by a campus tour at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesdays are reserved for groups such as Topeka Gear Up, an organization of middle school students, which plans visits in October and November. Other groups recently scheduling visits include Wichita Talent Search for students from all Wichita public high schools and the Wyandotte County League of United Latin American Citizens, bringing high school and middle school students from Kansas City, Kan.
High school groups wishing to bring a group to the KU campus should contact the admissions office for details.
Because no classes are in session, visits are not scheduled during Thanksgiving break, Nov. 26 through 30, or after Dec. 12, when fall classes end. Limited campus tours are available during fall break, Oct. 17 through 19, however.
In the fall, the office offers special visit days for high school seniors and their guests, and in the spring, similar visits are scheduled for high school juniors, Pinamonti said.
"The Senior and Junior Days are designed to provide an overview of KU, and the entire day is planned for the student," she said. Preregistration is required, and the cost is $10 for students and $8 for guests. The small fee includes breakfast, lunch and a KU T-shirt for students for the Senior and Junior Days events.
It is important to schedule visits in advance, Pinamonti said. Senior Day and Junior Day programs are limited and are on a first-come, first-served basis.
