TOPEKA -- The Kansas Board of Regents today gave final approval today to the new three-year contract between the University of Kansas and the Kansas Association of Public Employees (KAPE), which represents graduate teaching assistants on the KU Lawrence campus.
The contract was ratified earlier this month by the Kansas Secretary of Administration. In August, KU and KAPE signed off on it, and Lawrence campus graduate teaching assistants ratified the agreement Aug. 26.
"This contract sets us on a path for much better compensation for our GTAs, an improvement we owe to new tuition revenue and support from our students," Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger said. "Its a win all the way around: GTAs will be better compensated for their performance in the classroom, and the university will be better able to recruit the best and brightest graduate students."
The contract calls for a 10 percent increase to the merit salary pool for each of three years. It also establishes a new base salary for a half-time academic year appointment, of $8,000 for year one, $9,000 for year two and $10,000 for year three of the agreement.
The merit raises and new salary schedule go into effect immediately. The university will initiate salary increases retroactively for GTAs who have been teaching since classes began in August.
