LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Army ROTC recently awarded more than $98,875 in federal scholarships and $52,404 in state scholarships to 17 students this year.
The students received the scholarships based on academic merit and involvement in extracurricular activities. Federal scholarships are worth up to $13,686 a year and cover the cost of tuition, books and fees. They include a $250 a month stipend. State scholarships provide $6,484 a year and cover the same items.
"We have a superb freshman class this year that is strong academically," said Lt. Col. Brian DeToy, professor of military science at KU. "These young men and women truly have a desire to serve their communities and their nation."
Last year, KU Army ROTC achieved its officer-commissioning goal for the first time in five years, DeToy said. The program commissioned 17 new officers, exceeding its goal by two second lieutenants.
KU Army ROTC has 85 cadets: 70 men and 15 women (18 percent). Of the 85 cadets, 16 are minorities (19 percent), which is more than double the university's minority percentage.
Four of the 17 scholarship winners (not listed) attend Washburn University but are cadets in KU's Army ROTC program.
KU Army ROTC scholarship winners are listed alphabetically by Kansas county, then by state or country. Information is presented in the following order: name, year and major and/or area of study, parents' names, high school alma mater and type of scholarship.
