Scholar on men, masculinity and sexism to give lectures at KU Oct. 2

LAWRENCE -- A scholar and author who has received international recognition for his work on men and masculinity will speak Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the University of Kansas.

Michael S. Kimmel, a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, will present a lecture, "Mars and Venus? Or Planet Earth? Issues for Women in the Millennium," at 7:30 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Union.

His lecture is sponsored by the sociology department, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Women's Studies Program and the American studies department.

Kimmel is spokesman for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism and has lectured at more than 200 colleges and universities. He leads workshops on sexual harassment prevention and gender equity for public sector organizations. For campus groups, Kimmel leads workshops on date and acquaintance rape, sexual assault, pornography and the changing relations between women and men.

His recent books include "Men Confront Pornography" (Crown, 1990), "Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990" (Beacon, 1992), "Manhood in America: A Cultural History" (Free Press, 1996), and "The Gendered Society" (Oxford, 2000).
