LAWRENCE -- For the first time, starting next month, the University of Kansas timetable of classes will be offered exclusively online.
Because of a cooperative effort with the vice provost for information services, the Office of Institutional Research and Planning and the Office of the University Registrar, students, faculty and staff will be able access the timetable in its entirety at www.timetable.ku.edu.
"In addition to being able to provide the most up-to-date timetable information to anyone, anywhere in the world, in a tight budget milieu the university is saving significant printing and distribution costs by going online exclusively," said Richard C. Morrell, KU registrar.
With the online timetable, students and their faculty advisers will have the high-tech and high-touch advantage of having information updated every 30 minutes, said Cindy Derritt, associate university registrar.
Students and faculty also will be able to see whether a class has filled or how many spaces remain open by clicking on the "Open Classes" option. Classes that have filled will be listed in red.
Other items such as the academic calendar, advising chart, and codes for academic majors and other abbreviations used in the timetable are available for viewing online and are easily printed for those who must refer to them often.
"Portions of the timetable have been online for many years, but this will be the first time it has been the exclusive source for faculty and students in its entirety," said Karen Hammond, information technology consultant for the Office of the University Registrar.
Advising for spring 2003 enrollment begins Oct. 21.
In early October, the university registrar will send e-mail notices to all faculty and students indicating that the timetable is exclusively available online. Posters reminding those on campus of the online timetable address will be posted throughout the Lawrence and other KU campuses.
Enrollment services staffers are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer questions about accessing the online timetable, Derritt said. Enrollment services may be reached at (785) 864-5462 or by sending e-mail to enrollment@ku.edu.
