Exhibit of art by visually impaired artists to benefit Audio-Reader, other services

LAWRENCE -- Proceeds from the Kansas City visit of a world-renowned traveling art exhibit featuring the works of visually impaired artists will benefit the University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network and two other service providers for the visually impaired.

The 42-piece exhibit, "Art of the Eye," will be on display Sept. 15 to 25 at the Blue Gallery in the Crossroads District at 7 W. 19th St. in Kansas City, Mo. The exhibit is sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Delta Gamma Alumnae Association and is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Audio-Reader is a public service offered by KU that provides live and recorded broadcasts of newspapers, magazines, current books and other printed materials. Audio-Reader gives this service free of charge to thousands of people in Kansas and western Missouri. Other beneficiaries are the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired, Kansas Specialty Dog Services Inc. and Alphapointe.

The exhibit's honorary chair is David H. Westbrook, community leader and founder of Corporate Communications Group Inc., a Kansas City-based public relations firm. Westbrook is blind, diagnosed in 1961 with what is now called juvenile glaucoma.

"Art of the Eye" features the work of 10 contemporary American artists with various visual impairments. There are 28 two-dimensional pieces and 14 sculptures. Exhibit visitors who are visually impaired will be able to touch the sculpture pieces. The exhibit showcases the talents and abilities of visually impaired artists and demonstrates that vision exists beyond the physical capability to see.

A fundraising gala called "A Night for Sight" will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. Enjoy hot jazz, icy champagne and amazing art. Gala attendees are encouraged to purchase dinner next door at Zin, which will donate 20 percent of its sales from gala diners to "Art of the Eye." Reservations are required for the gala. Ticket prices start at $50 a person. Call (913) 631-5660 for tickets.

"Art of the Eye" is owned by the national Delta Gamma Foundation and was created with the help of curator Scott Nelson and the financial support of the Houston Delta Gamma Foundation and the Lions Club International. The exhibit has been on tour since 1997.

Call (913) 681-1452 for more information about the exhibit.
