MANHATTAN -- Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Kansas, will give the keynote address at the Kansas State University Hispanic Heritage Month observance on Oct. 2.
Murguia will speak at 11:30 a.m. in the K-State Student Union Little Theatre.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Murguia will be deputy grand marshal of KU's second annual Hispanic Heritage Month Parade at 2 p.m. on Jayhawk Boulevard during the university's annual Open House. The parade will feature flags from 100 countries.
Murguia serves on the board of directors for the National Council of La Raza, the largest Hispanic advocacy organization in the United States. In April, Murguia was one of 13 women in academia chosen for Hispanic Business magazine's list of the "Elite 80" Hispanic businesswomen in the United States.
In September, Murguia was an invited panelist for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Issues Conference, a traditional national kickoff for Hispanic Heritage Month, in Washington, D.C.
This year's national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is "Hispanic American: Strength in Unity, Faith and Diversity." The celebration started on Mexican Independence Day, Sept. 16, and will continue through Oct. 16.
