LAWRENCE -- The former president of the Kansas Senate, Richard L. "Dick" Bond, and his wife, Suzanne "Sue" Sedgwick Bond, have committed $250,000 for a professorship in public policy at the University of Kansas School of Law, Dean Stephen R. McAllister announced today.
The Overland Park couple gave $54,000 in securities toward the establishment of the Richard L. and Suzanne Sedgwick Bond Fund at the Kansas University Endowment Association. The Bonds have pledged the remainder of the gift through their estate plans.
The total gift counts toward the $500 million goal of KU First: Invest in Excellence, the third and largest fund-raising campaign in KU history.
"Dick Bond is one of our most accomplished alumni," McAllister said. "He and Sue are outstanding Kansans that put public service first. The professorship supported by their gift will help us someday attract a major scholar in public policy, an area of great importance to the School of Law."
Dick, political science '57 and law '60, served in the Kansas Senate from 1986 to 2001, including a four-year term as president of the Senate. He was recently appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents by Gov. Bill Graves.
Dick is a member of the Law Campaign Committee for KU First. He was the 1998 recipient of the School of Law's Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2001 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, KU's highest honor.
Sue, medical technology '58, is an active fund-raiser and volunteer for numerous community organizations including the American Cancer Society, Johnson County Community College, American Red Cross, United Way and the KU Center on Aging. She and Dick have a daughter, Amy Bond Sokoloff, psychology '87.
"We have devoted our lives to public service and by this gift and professorship we wish to encourage the KU School of Law to add greater academic emphasis to the development and study of public policy," Dick said.
KU Endowment is conducting KU First on behalf of KU through 2004 to raise funds for scholarships, fellowships, professorships, capital projects and program support. KU Endowment is an independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fund-raising and fund-management organization for KU.
