MEDIA ADVISORY: KU Endowment to award scholarships to 25 students at Sept. 14 football game

LAWRENCE -- For the second consecutive year, the Kansas University Endowment Association will give away 25 scholarships worth $1,000 each to University of Kansas students attending a KU football game.

Students will have the opportunity to be selected during the match-up Saturday, Sept. 14, between KU and Southwest Missouri State University. The 25 scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who sit in seats preselected by KU Endowment officials or who are chosen numerically from those entering Memorial Stadium for the game.

To qualify, students must be enrolled at KU and have their student ID, be present at the game and be wearing a blue 2002 edition KU First T-shirt. No purchase is necessary. KU First: Invest in Excellence is the third and largest fund-raising campaign for the university.

The KU First T-shirts, which were funded in part by Intrust Bank, will allow students to attend the game for free. About 17,000 of the shirts will be distributed to students on all four of KU's campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita from Monday, Sept. 9, through Friday, Sept. 13.

The scholarships were made possible by a $25,000 gift to KU Endowment from longtime KU supporters Dick and Jeanne Tinberg. The Leawood couple also provided the funding for the scholarships awarded during a fall 2001 football game between KU and UCLA.

Dick said he knows that attending college can be a struggle financially for some students.

"I recognize how tough it is," said Dick, the retired owner of Gateway Motors of Junction City. "My wife and I are happy to help these kids because a lot of them are up there on a shoestring budget. I know $1,000 won't cover a whole semester, but it will help."
