MEDIA ADVISORY: KU to install and test new steam whistle April 25

WHAT: KU's Facilities Operations staff will install the new steam whistle, which is used to mark the end of classes. The new whistle replaces a 60-year-old whistle, salvaged from a German freightliner in the 1940s, that suffered an irreparable crack on Jan. 22. A steam whistle has sounded on campus since 1912. The new whistle was forged in bronze by a Cincinnati manufacturer.

WHEN: 3 p.m. Friday, April 25, is the approximate time the whistle will be tested. Photographers may wish to arrive earlier to view the installation.

WHERE: The whistle will be installed on top of the KU power plant, which is located next door to the Facilities Operations office at 1503 Sunflower Road. The manufacturer will help with the installation.

The names of the donors who provided the financial support for the manufacture and installation of the whistle also will be announced Friday.
