WHO: Carlos Sariol, renowned Cuban journalist and international communications educator, will visit with students and faculty at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Kansas. Sariol is the former dean of journalism at the University of Havana in Cuba and is a professor with the Department of Graphic Arts and Public Information at the University of Puerto Rico at Carolina.
WHEN: April 7-9, Sariol will visit classrooms across campus.
WHAT: While visiting KU, Sariol will be a guest lecturer in several journalism, Spanish and business classes. He will share with faculty and students his research and professional experience in Latin America, along with his thoughts on the status of democracy and journalism and mass communications issues in the region. He also will be a guest of KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway at a dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, formalizing the cultural agreement between the University of Costa Rica, KU and Kansas State University. Sariol will address the following topics in his class lectures:
The role the so-called establishment press is playing in international and domestic news distribution in the developed world, as well as in the developing world.
The competition for credibility that many online outlets present to the traditional media worldwide, but particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Thoughts from the ethical, competent young journalists in Cuba today regarding ethics, job opportunities and the role of government in mass media.
Journalistic practices and ethics in Cuba before and after the revolution, along with a look at Latin American media ethics in general.
Stress in Latin American democratization and strains with U.S./Latin American relations.
The "reporting life" in Argentina, California, Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Germany, Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Spain.
