LAWRENCE -- Five new recipients of Self graduate fellowships at the University of Kansas have been announced by the provost's office. Self graduate fellowships are four-year awards that cover full tuition and fees, provide a $22,000 annual stipend and include a development program for doctoral students. "The fellowships are the most generously funded doctoral fellowships at KU," said David Shulenburger, KU provost and executive vice chancellor.
The program's mission is to identify and recruit exceptional Ph.D. students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole. The program also provides development opportunities for the students.
The new Self fellows are all in Ph.D. programs. They are:
Heather Amthauer in electrical engineering and computer science, 1996 bachelor's degree in chemistry from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
Heather Anne Kirkvold McLeod in civil, environmental and architectural engineering, 1997 bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Kristin Elizabeth Price in chemistry, 2003 bachelor's degree in chemistry from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
Sara Schebler in pharmaceutical chemistry, 2002 bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Iowa in Iowa City
Melissa Danielle Temple in pharmacology and toxicology, 2003 bachelor's degrees in chemistry and biology from Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.
Madison "Al" and Lila Self of Hinsdale, Ill., created the Self Fellowship Fund in 1989, with the first fellows being named in 1991. Madison Self is a 1943 KU graduate in chemical engineering. Lila Self is a native of Eudora and attended KU with the class of 1943.
