KU students advance in Music Teachers National Association state competition

LAWRENCE -- Two University of Kansas students won first place in their areas of the Music Teachers National Association state competition in late November and will advance to the district contest, held Jan. 16, 2004, in Boulder, Colo.

Winners of the district event will compete in the MTNA finals, held March 27-31, 2004, in Kansas City, Mo.

Flutist Anne "Annie" Davidson, Russell senior, is a student of David Fedele, assistant professor of music and dance. Soprano Greer Davis Brown, Golden Valley, Minn., senior, studies with Pamela Hinchman, associate professor of music and dance.

Hinchman's students swept the vocal areas of the MTNA, as well as other competitions this fall.

 • Baritone Michael L. Brown, Perry senior, won first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition.
 • In the MTNA contest, Brown took second place and Lindsay Ohse, Topeka junior, placed third.
 • Yoojin Jeon, Seoul, South Korea, doctoral student, and Soyoun Chun of Lawrence won the top two positions in the Kansas Music Teachers Association contest. Candice Bondank, Overland Park freshman, placed third in the KMTA Freshman Division.

"I was pleased with the results because my students are undergraduates who beat graduate students," Hinchman said.

The Department of Music and Dance is one of three academic units of the KU School of Fine Arts. For more information, please call (785) 864-3436.
