LAWRENCE -- Two online math and statistics courses now are available to Kansas students and teachers. University of Kansas Continuing Education's Independent Study program offers Elementary Statistics (MATH 365) and Introduction to Topics in Mathematics (MATH 105). Statistics in Psychological Research (PSYC 300) also is available.
MATH 365 is offered in both online and print-based deliveries, MATH 105 is offered online and PSYC 300 is a print-based course. Students may enroll in and begin these courses at any time.
MATH 105 provides experience and insight into various areas of math. The course material emphasizes statistics, including estimation. MATH 365 covers all aspects of elementary statistics. PSYC 300 introduces statistical concepts and methods that relate to analysis and interpretation of psychological data.
Satya Mandal, KU professor of mathematics, created 140 animations for the two online math and statistics courses, using Flash-5 software. The animations ask students to complete problems one step at a time and then check the answer. Some answers include visual explanations with animated and interactive graphs.
"The availability of online homework submittal for these courses is an extraordinary teaching and learning tool because it allows students to offer their efforts electronically and to receive instant feedback," Mandal said.
