Student leaders to converge on capitol Tuesday

TOPEKA -- More than 40 student leaders from the state's six Regents universities will converge on the state Capitol Tuesday, Feb. 11, to meet with legislators for State Education Day.

The students have made more than 100 appointments with legislators, starting at 7:30 a.m. and extending through 4:30 in the afternoon, said Johanna Maska, legislative director for the University of Kansas Student Senate.

Maska said the students will be urging legislators to support Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' budget, which does not make any additional cuts to higher education this year, and that financial aid to students needs to be raised in direct proportion to any increases in tuition.

More than 10 KU students are expected to go to the capitol, including Student Body President Jonathan Ng, Leawood senior.
