Building, advisory committees for new KU scholarship hall to select design

LAWRENCE -- The building and community advisory committees for a new University of Kansas scholarship hall will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, to discuss selection of a design concept.

The meeting will be in the Centennial Room of the Kansas Union.

The two committees have worked separately with a design team from the project architect, Treanor Architects, since an initial joint meeting Jan. 15. Eight models of design concepts were developed. In separate meetings, the committees have determined architectural priorities, focusing on two of the design concepts.

In addition to the customary building committee, KU established a community advisory committee to assist in this architectural planning phase for a women's scholarship hall on Ohio Street.

Treanor Architects, a firm praised for its designs of student living accommodations and ability to address historic sensitivities, was chosen by the KU Endowment Association in November to design the $3 million project.

Members of the community advisory committee are Vance Kelley, chair, Treanor Architects; Paul Stuewe and Jeff Messick, Lawrence Historic Resource Commission representatives; Barry Newton, Lawrence Preservation Alliance representative; Candice Davis, Oread Neighborhood representative; Mary Lee Hummert and John Gaunt, Campus Historic Preservation Board representatives; KU student representative Adam Benjamin Rich, Omaha, Neb., senior; and Jeffery Weinberg, ex-officio and liaison between the chancellor, the Lawrence community and the campus.

Members of the building committee are Ken Stoner, chair and director of student housing; Nadia Zhiri, Treanor Architects; KU student representatives Jason Holborow, Chesterfield, Mo., sophomore, and Maggie Hansen, Sand Springs, Okla., senior; Warren Corman, university architect; John Eye, Design Construction Management project manager; Donna Bell, community representative; and Weinberg, community advisory committee liaison.
