LAWRENCE -- An initial, joint meeting of the building and community advisory committees for a new University of Kansas scholarship hall will be at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the banquet room of Mrs. E's Dining Commons.
In addition to the customary building committee, KU established a community advisory committee to assist with the architectural planning phase for a women's scholarship hall on Ohio Street. KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger called for creation of an advisory committee with representatives from community organizations to help provide "broad-based input in the design of this facility."
The agenda for Wednesday's meeting includes presentations on the scope of the project by Ken Stoner, director of student housing; the committees' charges and roles by Shulenburger; the design phases, schedule and process by Jim Modig, director of KU design construction and management; and a site analysis by Nadia Zhiri, Treanor Architects.
Treanor Architects, a firm praised for its designs of student living accommodations and an ability to address historic sensitivities, was chosen by the KU Endowment Association in November to design the $3 million project.
The first meeting of the community advisory committee will follow the adjournment of the joint meeting.
Members of the community advisory committee are Vance Kelley, chair, Treanor Architects; Paul Stuewe and Jeff Messick, Lawrence Historic Resource Commission representatives; Barry Newton, Lawrence Preservation Alliance representative; Candice Davis, Oread Neighborhood representative; Mary Lee Hummert and John Gaunt, Campus Historic Preservation Board representatives; KU student representative Adam Benjamin Rich, Omaha, Neb., senior; and Jeffery Weinberg, ex-officio and liaison between the chancellor, the Lawrence community and the campus.
Members of the building committee are Stoner, chair; Zhiri; KU student representatives Jason Holborow, Chesterfield, Mo., sophomore, and Maggie Hansen, Sand Springs, Okla, senior; Warren Corman, university architect; John Eye, Design Construction Management project manager; Donna Bell, community representative; and Weinberg, community advisory committee liaison.
