LAWRENCE -- Firefighters and emergency response personnel from throughout Kansas will gather in Wichita Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 for the 16th annual Winter Fire School. The event is sponsored by the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute at the University of Kansas and is co-hosted by the Kansas State Firefighters Association and the Wichita and Sedgwick County fire departments.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, with a keynote address by Dave Dodson, author of "Fire Department Incident Safety Officer." Dodson, a 24-year fire service veteran from Colorado, is considered an expert on the role of incident safety officers in preventing firefighter injuries and deaths.
On Feb. 1 and 2, participants may choose from half-day, one-day and two-day courses. Topics will include implementing a rapid intervention team, interpreting smoke, detecting arson, performing an ice rescue, responding to the scene of a drug lab, fighting wildland fires, writing grants, highway incident safety and incident command for motor vehicle accidents.
Registration costs $25 for members of Kansas fire departments. The Wildland Firefighting course, which Kansas Forest Service is underwriting, is free.
The initial Firefighter 1 or Firefighter 2 certification exam will be administered the morning of Feb. 1, at a cost of $30.
