Free workshop at KU explains tax issues for graduate students

LAWRENCE -- The Graduate School and Legal Services for Students at the University of Kansas will host a free brown-bag workshop, "Tax Issues Facing Graduate Students," from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Jayhawk Room of the Kansas Union.

Jo Hardesty, director and managing attorney of Legal Services for Students, will present the information at this workshop. The office receives hundreds of inquiries each year from students about tax issues, she said.

For example, she said, students may not be happy to find out they must include scholarships on their tax returns. Omissions and errors on tax returns can subject the student to paying interest and penalties to the Internal Revenue Service.

Tax-law changes affecting students also will be explained. Reservations are not required. For more information, contact the Graduate School at (785) 864-6161.
