Spencer Museum of Art photography exhibit reveals Japan's many facets

LAWRENCE -- The exhibition "Hidden Japan" opens in the south balcony gallery of the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 11. "Hidden Japan" consists of 85 photographs, mostly black and white, by Kijuro Yahagi.

The artist traveled extensively throughout Japan in all seasons to capture these precise renderings. The images include geological features, architecture -- both ancient and modern -- and crowded cityscapes. They show natural wonders, technological marvels and the human imprint. Comments from the photographer alongside each shot give context or historical background on the image. The photography display is organized and circulated by the Japan Foundation.

Youmi Efurd, intern in Asian art at the museum, will give the lunch time Tour du Jour of the show at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. The photography remains on display through Feb. 16.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and is closed on Mondays. With the exception of Jan. 9, when the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the museum's Thursday hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
