KU announces the names of 118 freshman national scholars

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Office of Admissions and Scholarships has announced the names of 118 University of Kansas students in three national merit scholarship programs -- National Merit, National Hispanic and National Achievement.

KU attracted 51 merit scholars from Kansas, 17 students from Missouri and 50 from other states.

The National Merit scholarship is widely regarded as the most prestigious national award bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Fewer than 10,000 students receive National Merit scholarships from the 1.3 million who compete for the award. Recipients are chosen based on their academic abilities and records and extracurricular activities.

The National Achievement scholar program honors outstanding African-American students. Fewer than 1,000 students are recognized as National Achievement scholars out of the more than 115,000 who compete for the award. The recipients of this award also are chosen based on their academic abilities and extracurricular activities.

The National Hispanic scholar program bases its selection on a combination of test scores and grade-point averages. Out of 5,000 students who competed, 3,400 students were selected as scholar finalists.

These student scholars receive an annual scholarship package from the Office of Admissions and Scholarships worth $6,800 for in-state students and $14,000 for out-of-state students. The scholarship package covers tuition and fees for up to 15 credit hours per semester for eight semesters plus a housing stipend covering the cost of a KU scholarship hall.

In fall 2002, 99 National Merit scholars, 18 National Hispanic scholars and one National Achievement scholar enrolled at KU.
