Kansas Public Radio adds Hutchinson affiliate, expands Statehouse coverage

LAWRENCE -- Kansas Public Radio's award-winning Statehouse news coverage is heading into new territory.

The Hutchinson-based public radio network known as Radio Kansas has begun carrying news reports produced by the KPR Statehouse News Bureau in Topeka. Radio Kansas is a network of three public radio stations: KHCC 90.1-FM, serving Hutchinson and Wichita; KHCD 89.5-FM, serving Salina and Manhattan; and KHCT 90.9-FM, serving Great Bend and Hays.

Radio Kansas' coverage area stretches from WaKeeney in western Kansas to Manhattan in north-central Kansas and from Concordia near the Nebraska border to Medicine Lodge near the Oklahoma state line, including the cities of Russell, Hays, Great Bend, Salina, Abilene, Lindsborg, Pratt, Manhattan, El Dorado, Hutchinson and Wichita.

"We've always been impressed by the quality of KPR's Statehouse reports," said Ken Baker, director of programming at Radio Kansas. "We feel that our reputation for news in-depth is significantly enhanced by Peter Hancock's reports."

Hancock, KPR Statehouse bureau chief, provides news reports and feature stories on the Statehouse. Hancock has covered politics in Kansas for nearly 15 years and has won state and national awards for his reporting. Several of his reports also have been aired on National Public Radio news shows.

"The Statehouse news service we operate has a long history of providing quality, in-depth news reports about the business of state government," said J. Schafer, KPR news director. "Peter is the only broadcast reporter in Kansas who covers the Statehouse full time, year round. He covers nearly every major aspect of state government, and now, with Radio Kansas on board, we can get the word out to more Kansans."

In addition to Radio Kansas, four other public radio stations carry KPR's Statehouse news reports: KMUW in Wichita, KANZ in Garden City, KKSU in Manhattan and KCUR in Kansas City.

To distinguish between Lawrence-based Kansas Public Radio and the Statehouse news service it operates, all reports from the Statehouse will carry the identifier "Kansas Public Radio Network."

KANU 91.5-FM in Lawrence, the public radio station licensed to the University of Kansas, is the flagship station for the Kansas Public Radio Network. Other KPR stations are KANH 89.7-FM in Emporia, K210CR 89.9-FM in Atchison and KANV 91.3-FM in Olsburg, serving Manhattan and Junction City.
