LAWRENCE -- A longstanding resource for teachers of composition and literature has been reconfigured this year and will be presented by the University of Kansas on Friday, Feb. 21, at the new Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.
The Conference on New Literacies, formerly the Conference on Composition and Literature, will celebrate its 50th anniversary by focusing on how literature and the arts can collaborate in ways that expand and challenge traditional views. According to Maryemma Graham, KU professor of English and conference coordinator, the event has been reshaped "to reflect the need to understand literature and composition in relation to a world that is becoming more global, diverse and inclusive."
Registration is available online or by phone, (785) 864-KUCE (5823) or toll free (877) 404-KUCE (5823), or by e-mail, kuce@ku.edu.
The conference will include a panel on expanding the boundaries of literary instruction. Five focus sessions will concentrate on the interaction of literature with film, visual arts, writing, theatre, music and dance. Guest presenters will participate from Kansas and from nationwide institutions of higher education, including Carnegie Mellon University, Montana State University, Albion College in Michigan and Graceland University in Iowa.
Sponsors are the KU Department of English, Office of the Provost, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Office of Admissions and Scholarships and Continuing Education.
The conference coincides with the Feb. 19 through 23 Langston Hughes February Festival. A full schedule of festival events is available online at www.visitlawrence.com.
