LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas officials are encouraging KU students to go on the offensive against identity thieves and other cyber intruders. At the KU Student Senate meeting at 6:30 tonight, KU officials will address concerns about the security of student information and discuss what students can do to protect personal information from cyber thieves.
Marilu Goodyear, vice provost for information services, and Jenny Mehmedovic, coordinator for information technology policy, will introduce KU's "Top 10 Tips for Cyber Self-Defense" as well as guidelines for identity protection. They also will announce a new Web site dedicated to information security.
"We have been planning a comprehensive security awareness campaign since last fall," said Marilu Goodyear, vice provost for information services. "Information security is a hot topic to anyone who uses networked computers in our society today.
"This topic became a bit hotter at KU this past week, so we are providing these resources to arm the KU community with the tools they need to protect themselves."
Other KU officials at the Student Senate meeting will include Joe Potts, director of international student and scholar services, and Rich Morrell, university registrar.
The new information security Web site, www.security.ku.edu, will be launched a few hours before the Student Senate meeting.
