LAWRENCE -- The Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment Association on Feb. 11 will honor a Fort Scott couple for their service to the University of Kansas.
Kansas Alumni Association president and CEO Fred B. Williams will present Charles and Martha Jane Gentry of Fort Scott the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award to recognize their longtime support of the Kansas Honors Program.
The presentation will be part of the KHP dinner at Iola High School. Forty-two high school seniors from Allen, Bourbon and Woodson counties will be honored at the event.
In addition to supporting the KHP, Charles serves on the board of directors for the KU School of Allied Health and Martha Jane serves on the Greater University Fund board. Charles earned a bachelor's degree in English from KU in 1972 and a law degree from KU in 1975. He is a partner in the law offices of Short, Gentry and Bishop. Martha Jane earned bachelor's degrees in history and comparative literature in 1975 and in secondary education in 1976. She is a teacher in Fort Scott.
The Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award was created in 1986 by the Alumni Association to honor volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their communities. Clodfelter earned a bachelor's degree from KU in 1941 and worked at the university for 47 years, 42 at the Alumni Association. Clodfelter retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.
Since 1971, the Kansas Alumni and KU Endowment associations, with the help of more than 160 alumni volunteers statewide, have sponsored Kansas Honors Program events to honor the top 10 percent of Kansas high school seniors.
