Hall Center calls for 2003 Byron Caldwell Smith Award nominations

LAWRENCE -- The Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas seeks nominations for the Byron Caldwell Smith Award. The award is given biennially to an individual who lives or is employed in Kansas and who has written an outstanding book published during calendar year 2001 or 2002. The $2,000 award will be presented in September in Lawrence.

The Byron Caldwell Smith Award was established at the bequest of Kate Stephens, a former KU student and one of the university's first women professors. As an undergraduate at KU, Kate Stephens learned to love the study of Greek language and literature from Professor Byron Caldwell Smith. She established this award in his name.

A committee appointed by the Hall Center director is responsible for the selection of award recipients. The recipient of the Byron Caldwell Smith Book Award will deliver a public talk on the subject of the book.

Send a letter of nomination, which must include a statement regarding the nominee's eligibility, the nominee's address and telephone number, and three non-returnable copies of the nominee's book to Smith Award, Hall Center for the Humanities, University of Kansas, 1540 Sunflower Road, Lawrence, KS 66045-7618.

Self-nominations are accepted.

Deadline: 5 p.m. Monday, March 3
