KU officials remind Lawrence residents to not be alarmed during air parade

LAWRENCE -- Officials at the University of Kansas would like to remind Lawrence residents that they shouldn't be alarmed by any loud airplanes participating in the ConocoPhillips air parade as part of the dedication ceremonies for the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics.

The air parade, which starts at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, will begin on the north side of town at the Lawrence Municipal Airport and fly over Memorial Stadium at KU before circling back to the airport. The parade, which will feature more than 20 World War II-era planes, is scheduled to conclude by noon.

Jeff Weinberg, assistant to the chancellor, said he wanted to apologize in advance for any inconvenience the noise might cause Lawrence residents.

"We regret any concern and surprise that the event may cause," Weinberg said. "We hope that it will be viewed as a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for our community."

People interested in attending the air parade are encouraged to view it from the stadium, where it also will be broadcast on a big screen. Seating, concessions and restrooms will be available only on the stadium's east side.
