LAWRENCE -- Thomas Heilke, associate professor of political science, will serve as interim associate dean of international programs during the 2003-04 academic year, Diana Carlin, dean of the graduate school and international programs, has announced.
Heilke will replace Paul D'Anieri, who recently accepted the position of director of Russian and East European studies at KU. A search for a permanent replacement for D'Anieri will take place in the spring.ÊDuring the fall semester, Heilke will help prepare a report for use in an external review of best practices in international education at KU. The report will provide direction for the associate dean's position in expanding the scope of international activities throughout the university as well as ways the university can better capitalize on its international resources.
Heilke, a native of Canada, holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and studied at the Freie Universitat Berlin and Kirchliche Hochschule in Berlin.ÊHis research areas include political theory, politics and religion, international relations and Canadian studies. He directed the humanities and Western civilization study abroad program in Paris and Florence in the spring semester of 2000. He also served as director of graduate studies in political science from 1997 to 2001.
