National Hispanic magazine puts spotlight on KU executive vice chancellor

LAWRENCE -- Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Kansas, is featured in the current issue of the national Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.

The story "Four Latinas Making a Difference: Remarkable Women with Great Expectations" groups Murguia with Marisa Rivera-Albert, president of the National Hispana Leadership Institute in Arlington, Va.; Patricia Telles-Irvin, Florida International University vice president for student affairs and human relations and vice provost for academic affairs; and Cari M. Dominguez, chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

After graduating from the KU School of Law in 1985, Murguia moved to Washington, D.C., to work for former Kansas Rep. Jim Slattery. She served in the White House as a deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton, then as deputy campaign manager for Al Gore.

A native of the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan., Murguia says her return to Kansas and KU was a given: "I saw the power of education at work in my family and my life. It is important that we know that we can get a postsecondary degree and utilize it wherever we are.

"I want to be able to promote the importance of pursuing education and making education accessible and affordable."
