KU to honor two Atchison alumni and Atchison County high school seniors

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association will honor Bill and Donna Rogers Roe of Atchison for their longtime volunteer efforts on behalf of KU at a 6:30 p.m. dinner program Monday, March 24, at Atchison Heritage Conference Center, 710 S. Ninth St.

The couple will be honored during a Kansas Honors Scholars program for seniors from four Atchison County high schools who rank in the top 10 percent of their class.

Honorees are listed below.

Paul Atchley, assistant professor of the KU psychology department, will speak at Monday's program. Fred B. Williams, Alumni Association president and CEO, will present the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award to the Roes in recognition of their longtime support of the Kansas Honors Program.

The program will cost parents and alumni $12.50 each. Honored alumni and students will be guests of the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association.

Dr. Chad and Carri Ball, Atchison, are the site and Atchison County coordinators.

Honored alumni Bill Roe earned a KU bachelor's degree in physical education in 1967 and a master's degree in education and administration in 1978. In addition to working with the Kansas Honors Program, Bill is a teacher in the Recovery Room at the St. Joseph School District and coaches the St. Joseph Central High School golf teams.

Donna received a master's degree in education and counseling in 1975. She teaches math at Benton High School in St. Joseph and has taught at Benedictine College in Atchison and Highland Community College.

The Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award, created in 1986 by the Alumni Association, honors volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their home communities. The award is named for Clodfelter, who received a bachelor's degree in 1941 from KU and worked at the university for 47 years, 42 of them at the Alumni Association. Clodfelter retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 85,600 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
